Magdalena Bowen is an award-winning vocalist who is inspired by the visual and auditory art forms and also has an appreciation for American Sign Language. She is a third-year student at the Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific (UOP) in Stockton, California, majoring in Vocal Performance and minoring in Studio Art.
Her love for singing started when she sang as part of a choir as a child, first at St. Robert Catholic School and then Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento. She also has experience cantoring at St Robert Church. She has sung at weddings, funerals, and social events and gains great satisfaction in singing for the elderly at senior care facilities where she can feel their joy in the music she provides.
Over the years, Magdalena has competed in various singing competitions including the National Association of Teachers of Singing where she placed in 2018, and the Sacramento Master Singers where she placed in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
Magdalena currently studies voice under Dr. Heidi Moss Erickson and auditioned for and is a member of the esteemed Pacific Singers at UOP. She is thrilled to have been part of numerous musical performances as part of the Conservatory including Handel’s Alcina as an ensemble member and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel where she played the character of Arminy as well as the cover for Julie Jordan. Magdalena also performed as Lady Sybil and the cover for Guinevere in Camelot and has been part of two Follies productions. She is currently preparing for the opera, The Medium.
Magdalena also has a great love for art and enjoys working in different mediums through her art studies at UOP. She enjoys recognition for her talent, and it has enabled her to enter and place in community art competitions and to have her work shown at the Crocker Art Museum Junior Artists show in Sacramento. Magdalena’s goal is to continue working in the arts and motivate other well-rounded artists.
Magdalena recently studied abroad in Italy to strengthen her Italian and familiarize herself with the local culture. She has studied American Sign Language for years and has a strong connection with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community in the area. She plans to continue with Sign Language once she graduates from UOP. The Deaf Community inspires Magdalena, and she hopes to one day bridge her Sign Language skills with her musical abilities and bring the gift of music to those unable to experience it the same way as hearing people.
